Momentous (originally known as Cherish the Memories;[3] Traditional Chinese: 迪士尼星夢光影之旅), is the nighttime spectacular at the Hong Kong Disneyland theme park in Lantau, Hong Kong that debuted on 18 June 2022. Produced by the Disney Live Entertainment, the show feature fireworks, fire effects, projection mapping, lasers, searchlights, and water fountains to depict scenes and soundtracks from some of classic and modern animated films from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar to tell about the stages of life and challenges against them.[4]

The show was originally scheduled to debuted in 2020, as part of Hong Kong Disneyland's 15th anniversary celebration and the completion of the Castle of Magical Dreams.[5] However, it was delayed to 18 June 2022, due to multiple park closures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which reopened on 21 April of that year.[6]

History[edit]

In November 2016, as part of multi-year expansion of Hong Kong Disneyland, they announced to replace the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle with a new castle that pays an homage to all Disney Princesses and queens.[7] The former fireworks show, Disney in the Stars, held its final performance on 1 January 2018 before the castle transformation started.[8] Construction of the new castle began in 2018 and finished in 2020. The renovated castle was unveiled at the D23 Expo in 2019 as the Castle of Magical Dreams.[9]

Momentous was soft-opened on gala premiere for media guests and stakeholders on 14 June 2022 despite the inclement weather and was presented by the managing director of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort Michael Moriarty and the Financial Secretary of Hong Kong Paul Chan Mo-po, with sorcerer Mickey Mouse joined to open the show for the first time.[10] Momentous also had performances on 16 June for cast members and 17 June for Platinum Magic Access members before the official opening date.

Show elements[edit]

Based on the Happily Ever After fireworks show at the Magic Kingdom (and largely utilizing the same creative team), Momentous is told through six chapters, featuring characters from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar films. The show features an original theme song specifically used for the show – Love the Memory – which was originally Hong Kong Disneyland's 15th anniversary anthem in 2020.[11]

Unlike the predecessor Disney in the Stars, it didn't utilize firework shells behind It's a Small World, that is the site where Arendelle: World of Frozen was constructed. It instead utilizing pyrotechnics in the castle combined with 48 high-powered searchlights in either side of the castle. The show also features water fountains that can be shot as high as 80 feet, water projections, and two lasers that have utilized in either side of the castle. The pyrotechnic elements of the upcoming show were tested in August 2020 during the park's closure[12] and was tested again in February 2022. The projections were utilized by Mousetrappe.[13]

Show summary[edit]

Pre-Show[edit]

Beginning 30 minutes before showtime, various vignettes featuring an animated pendulum are projected onto the castle. Largely seen on the tallest tower, these vignettes depict scenes from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Little Mermaid, Mulan, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Tangled.

In the 30 minute and 5 minute reminder announcements, the premise of the show is explained:

“Each of us lives a lifetime filled with magical moments, shaping us into who we become and gifting us with what we leave behind. Tonight, we celebrate those moments, inspiring us to live life to the fullest, and to cherish the memories we make together.”

Opening[edit]
