Mona Chemali Khalaf (1939 – 2018) was a well-known Lebanese women's rights activist and distinguished economist. She constantly and proudly fought for gender equality and women's empowerment throughout her lifetime. One of her primary goals was to tackle gender and growth issues in the Arab world in particular.
Biography
Mona Chemali Khalaf graduated in 1961 from the American University of Beirut (Faculty of Arts and Sciences) with a bachelor’s degree in Economics with distinction. She continued her education at AUB to receive a master's degree in economics in 1964. She became a member of the AUB's President Club in 1992 and became the club's Chairperson in 2011. Additionally, she was a faculty member at another university (Beirut University College, also known as the Lebanese American University). Moreover, Mona Khalaf participated in and was a speaker at multiple conferences worldwide. She was the director of the Institute for Women's Studies in the Arab World at the Lebanese American University, Beirut, to pursue her goal in advocating for women's empowerment and rights.[1]

Not much information is known about Khalaf's life before starting her studies at the American University of Beirut, as she became an important figure after graduating.
Career
Mona C. Khalaf was a professor who taught economics at the Lebanese American University (LAU). Also, she directed the "Institute for Women's Studies in the Arab World" at the same university. Additionally, she took part in GERPA, also known as the advisory board of the Gender Economic Research and Policy Analysis Initiative. For a long time, she dedicated her time to serving in Lebanese and International NGOs, some of which were women empowerment and gender equality based.
Marriage and children
Mona Chemali Khalaf was married to Dr. Nadim Khalaf, a former Professor and Chairperson of the Economics Department at the American University of Beirut. They raised a family together and had two children, Nada Khalaf and Dr. Amin Khalaf, who was also an AUB graduate.[2]
Death and afterward
Mona Khalaf died unexpectedly on January 6, 2018, in New-York City while visiting her family. Knowing that Mona was a big part of the AUB community and played an important role in many people's lives, many attended her memorable ceremony held in Bathish Auditorium, West Hall, at the American University of Beirut on April 3, 2018, to honor her and her accomplishments. Many spoke highly of her during their speeches, for example Dr. Fadlo R. Khuri whose friendship with her lasted for about 50 years, her son Dr. Amin Khalaf who appreciated his mother's hard work, and some of her friends such as Eugenie Hosri, Mouna Haraoui, Salwa Siniora Baasiri, and Antoine Haddad.
Philosophical and/or political views
Mona Khalaf believed in empowering women and in the importance of women's rights, which was vividly present in almost all of her work.
Published works
- In 2009, Mona C. Khalaf wrote a book titled "Male Migration and the Lebanese Family: The Impact on the Wife Left Behind," which was published by Duke University Press.
- In 2002, Khalaf contributed to writing a section in the book "Lebanon's Second Republic" published by University Press of Florida. In her section, titled "Women in Postwar Lebanon," Khalaf discusses the impact of the Lebanon's civil war on women, the gap in wages between women and men, women's participation in the workforce, and women's rights.
