Monacoin (モナコイン) is cryptocurrency, considered to be the first cryptocurrency created in Japan.[2] Monacoin was initially introduced in December 2013 on 2channel by an anonymous user named Mr. Watanabe.[3]
Monacoin is based on the code of Litecoin, but the proof-of-work algorithm is Lyra2ReV2, which is an ASIC-resistant proof of work algorithm also used by Vertcoin. The name "Monacoin" comes from a Shift-JIS character called Mona (モナー), commonly used on 2channel.[3][4]
As of April 2018[update], the market capitalization of Monacoin was around 220 million US dollars.[3]

The Monacoin network was officially launched on January 1, 2014.[2][3]
Monacoin gained popularity after the hacking of Mt. Gox, as a coin that was "safe and made in Japan."[3] In 2014, a plot of land was purchased using Monacoins.[5][3] In June 2017, a computer store in Akihabara started accepting Bitcoin and Monacoin for purchases.[6]
On March 8, 2017, a soft fork was executed at block 937440 to activate Segwit.[2]
In January 2018, a 17-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly creating a virus to steal Monacoin private keys.[7]
In March 2018, the Monacoin network suffered from a 51% attack causing around $90,000 in damages.[8]
Use and exchanges[edit]
Monacoin is used mostly in Japan.[3] It is traded on Japanese exchanges including Zaif, and is accepted in some stores in Japan.[9]
Like Dogecoin, Monacoin is often used for Internet tipping. Monacoins can be tipped via Twitter.[3] Specific to Monacoin, the tipping amounts are often derived from Japanese wordplay.[citation needed]
