Monica Mehta (born 1974) is an American author, finance commentator and investor. She is the author of The Entrepreneurial Instinct: How Everyone Has the Innate Ability to Start a Successful Small Business.[1] Mehta writes small business and finance columns for Inc. and Entrepreneur and appears regularly on national cable networks including Fox News, Fox Business, CNN, Bloomberg Television, MSNBC and HBO.[2][3] She is a managing principal at Seventh Capital, a New York based investment firm.[4][5][6]

Early life[edit]

Monica is South Asian-American.[7] Mehta’s father was a merchant marine ship’s captain and she spent her early childhood living at sea until her family immigrated to Texas in 1980. Her parents faced initial struggles as new immigrants before becoming successful small business owners.[8][9] In 1997, Mehta graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton School.[10] While at Penn, she was a member of the award winning jazz a cappella group Counterparts, performing alongside Grammy award winning singer John Legend.[11] Mehta also worked as a small business consultant at the Wharton Small Business Development Center where she assisted local West Philadelphia businesses write business plans and prepare loan applications.[12] Mehta was inducted into The Lantern Society, a senior society for outstanding Wharton undergraduates[13]

Career, Media Appearances and Book[edit]

Following graduation, Mehta joined Marakon Associates as a strategy consultant and then worked as a brand manager for L’Oreal and an investor for a seed fund backed by the Texas Pacific Group. She is currently an investor for Seventh Capital, an investment firm with offices in New York and Texas.[14] Mehta started appearing on cable television as a business and finance expert in 2006. She is a frequent guest for programs including Real Time with Bill Maher, The O’Reilly Factor, Fox & Friends, The Adam Carolla Show, Your World with Neil Cavuto, CNN and ABC News.[15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27] In 2012 Mehta published her first book, The Entrepreneurial Instinct: How Everyone Has the Innate Ability to Start a Successful Small Business, which explores the role of behavior and brain chemistry in our ability to take entrepreneurial risks and bounce back from failure to start a financially successful business.[28][29][30][31] The book was recognized as "Best Start-up Book" 2013 by Small Business Trends,[32] and was a finalist for "Best Business & Economics Book of 2012" by Foreword Reviews,[33] and "Best Small Business Book of 2012" by the National Federation of Independent Businesses.[34]
