Monica Ruiz is an American actor and model. Ruiz is best known for appearing in the commercial for Peloton titled The Gift That Gives Back, which received criticism for its sexist plot.

Early life and education

Monica Ruiz was born in Redondo Beach, California. She graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara in June 2004, majoring in Sociology.[1]

Career

Ruiz began her modelling career in 2004, modelling in adverts for Speedo, Nordstrom, Gap and Volkswagen.[1][2] She has also starred in commercials for Rent-A-Center, Lee jeans, Herbal Essences, Peloton, and Aviation American Gin.[3] In July 2018, while pregnant, Ruiz appeared on the cover of Pregnancy & Newborn magazine, and modeled maternity clothing in advertisements for Gap.[3]

Ruiz began her acting career in 2009 with a guest role in the comedy-drama, The Game. In 2014, Ruiz appeared in the buddy cop action comedy, Let's Be Cops, the sketch comedy television series The Birthday Boys, and the sitcom About a Boy. In 2015, she had a guest role on Baby Daddy as Marissa, and on The Exes as Casey.

In 2020, Ruiz starred in The Rookie as Alyce Scanlin, and also in 2020, began a recurring role in the sitcom The Bold and the Beautiful as Dr. Penny Escobar.[4] In 2021, she starred in Call Me Kat as Jaylene.[5]

Peloton commercial controversy

In November 2019, Ruiz appeared in a commercial for Peloton, titled The Gift That Gives Back. Ruiz played the character "Grace", a wife who receives a Peloton bike for Christmas from her husband, and begins recording a video diary of herself using the bike. In late November, the commercial began to receive criticism from viewers, who argued that its plot implicated that the wife's husband was unsatisfied with her physical appearance, even though Ruiz already looked physically fit in the commercial. Peloton defended the ad, arguing that it was intended to celebrate a "fitness and wellness journey", inspired by how its users were often "meaningfully and positively impacted after purchasing or being gifted a Peloton Bike, often in ways that surprise them."[6][7]

On December 8, 2019, Ruiz commented on the criticism of the commercial saying "I was happy to accept a job opportunity earlier this year from Peloton and the team was lovely to work with. [...] So to say I was shocked and overwhelmed by the attention this week (especially the negative) is an understatement."[8]

Later in December 2019, Ruiz appeared in a commercial for Ryan Reynolds's gin brand, Aviation American Gin, titled The Gift That Doesn't Give Back. The commercial was first posted on Reynolds' Twitter with the caption "Exercise bike not included". The commercial features multiple references to the Peloton commercial Ruiz appeared in.[9][10]

Personal life

Ruiz married Christopher O'Malley in September 2013 at Hermosa Beach, California. They have two children together.[3]
