Monk Giel
Monk Giel, born as Giel-Frédéric Foubert,[1] became the youngest Buddhist monk of Belgian origin under the name of Lobsang Nyima.[2][3]
He was born in Gent, Belgium on February 21, 1998. Since the age of six, he insisted on studying Buddhist philosophy and becoming a Buddhist monk.
At the age of fifteen, he gained permission to become a monk in a Tibetan monastery in India. When he was about to leave for the Brussels airport, he was stopped by the police on September 13, 2013 - ordered by a court decision. After a successful appeal, he finally left Belgium on November 13, 2013. His case rose a lot of public attention: the media called him "Monk Giel".[4]
Since 2013, he is studying as the only Western person in the Tibetan Jonang Thakten Phuntsok Choeling Monastery in Shimla, India. On November 24, 2013, he was ordained as a Buddhist monk.
