Monumental Zone of Iquitos
The Historic Center of Iquitos (officially the Monumental Zone of the City of Iquitos) is the Architectural Cultural Heritage that contains the assets linked to the history of the City of Iquitos. It is a sample of the buildings that were built mainly during the rubber boom, a time that greatly boosted the city.
Characteristics
A fundamental characteristic is the tiles with different motifs imported from Seville and Portugal. A great example is Casa Cohen with its sumptuous tiles, making Iquitos "the only city in Peru where we can see buildings clad the facades of its old houses." Another great example is the Iron House, a building with a prefabricated iron structure.
Delimitation
The historic center is made up of the Monumental Zone, the Surrounding Frame and possible sites to be declared. According to the Sustainable Urban Development Plan of Iquitos, the delimitation line starts from the Plaza de la Amistad, along the banks of the Itaya River to the Jirón Ricardo Palma, including the Maldonado and Tarapacá Malecones. [ 3 ] From Jirón Ricardo Palma, continue along Jirón Ramírez Hurtado until the intersection with Jirón Julio C. Arana. From the intersection of Jirón Ramírez Hurtado with Jirón San Martín continue to Plaza 28 de Julio, and then it borders Plaza 28 de Julio by the Jirón Elías Aguirre to the Jirón García Sanz. From the intersection of Jirón Elías Aguirre with Jirón García Sanz, it is drawn up to Avenida Almirante Miguel Grau Seminario. It continues along Jirón Grau towards Plaza 28 de Julio until the intersection of Avenida Mariscal Cáceres (the beginning of the Paseo de los Héroes Amazónicos) with Jirón Tacna. [ 3 ]
From the intersection of Avenida Mariscal Cáceres with Jirón Tacna, border the Plaza along Jr. San Martín until the intersection with Jirón Huallaga. From the intersection of Jr. San Martín with Jirón Huallaga, it is outlined by Jirón Huallaga to Jirón Sargento Lores. From Jirón Moore it continues until the intersection with Jirón Putumayo. From the intersection of Jirón Moore with Jr. Putumayo, it is traced along Jirón Putumayo to Jirón Arica and Plaza de Armas. [ 3 ] Finally it borders Plaza de Armas along the Jirón Arica, up to the Jirón Fitzcarrald, from there it continues along the Jirón Fitzcarrald to the Jirón Táwara West, on the main road, where it intersects with the Plaza de la Amistad. Conservation
The historic center of Iquitos is unique within the architecture of Peru, and very different from those of Lima, Trujillo and Cuzco. The historic buildings of Iquitos were built with climatological adaptations, managing to create a curious design within the Amazon. The conservation of the historic site is a constant function within the Sustainable Urban Development Plan of the city of Iquitos of the Provincial Municipality of Maynas, which is related to art. 21 of the Political Constitution of Peru; "Organic Law of Municipalities" (Law No. 27972); "General Law of Cultural Heritage of the Nation" (Law No. 28296) and the "Law that provides protection measures for the execution of works on immovable cultural property" (Law No. 27580). [ 3 ] To maintain the architectural line of the monumental area, the new buildings must be designed according to specific criteria. The allowed characteristics include a maximum height of 3 floors and 11 meters, and a facade without exceeding the property limit. [ 3 ] The parking lots, the fairs and deposits are permitted for a maximum of two years. [ 3 ] In a way, all new construction projects must follow the architectural line, and must respect the A-140 Regulation of Cultural Real Estate of the National Building Regulations.
In addition, the widening of the vehicular routes is prohibited, although the widening of the sidewalks is allowed for tourist reasons; which contrasts with the high traffic movement in the city center. It is arranged that the arborization be carried out with species typical of the region.
