MOONtransmissions is an American band rock duo formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2016. The band is a collaboration of producer SILVER and singer-songwriter Chelsea Dawn embracing desert rock, shoegaze, folk and soul, while maintaining a healthy electronic presence. While both perform a number of instruments across their records, their energetic live performance generally consists of Dawn on vocals and drums with Silver on guitar and synths.
History
In the early days of the band's first songs, MOONtransmissions worked with Mark Needham (legendary producer of The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Moby, Fleetwood Mac).[1] [2] [3] to produce their mixes at his Red Oak Studios, Los Angeles, CA. The band engineered the recordings at Silver’s Victory Road Studio, Canyon Hills, CA.
In 2016, We're So Close was featured by Kat Corbett on The World Famous KROQ for several weeks hitting #1.[4] Shortly after, their first single release for I Got A Fever [5] [6] [7] was featured on iTunes Hot Tracks Charts [8]
From 2016-2017, MOONtransmissions dropped a slew of singles, leading to the release of The Heart Ep in late 2018. The band released a single covering Bauhaus' All We Ever Wanted Was Everything on October 16 2020.
Shine is their newest single (2021), "Propelled along by an infectious foot-stomping, hand-clapping rhythm, wailing guitars and Chelsea Dawn’s soaring vocal, it’s a great introduction to the pair’s slick mixture of vintage and modern styles which draws on influences from Nina Simone and Curtis Mayfield to Bjork and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Recorded at Victory Road Studio in Canyon Hills, California and mixed and produced by the band, this is a proper DIY enterprise but doesn’t cut corners on big production values. Guitarist and keyboard player Dan Silver summarised the track, “It offers a socially responsible message with a high energy smathering of desert guitars, screaming keyboards, brass, heavy-handed drumming, marching percussion and even a set of corn-hole boards. It’s designed to be an anthem for the masses that begs the question “what makes you shine?”.[9]
In great company with the likes of Neil Young, Nomadland, St Vincent, Lana Del Rey, MOONtransmissions has recently been noted as one of Greil Marcus' Top 10, "Dan Silver, guitar; Chelsea Davis, singing, bass, drums. There’s something of Mariska Veres of Shocking Blue — less out of “Venus” than “Never Marry a Railroad Man” and “Rock in the Sea” — in Davis’s voice: a one-foot-in-the-grave Gothic remove. On this EP the four songs build as her grip tightens. “Down by the Water” is where people are saved and drowned. “My Oh My (I’ll Take You Home)” sounds like you might not get back."[10]
MOONtransmissions music has been featured on several TV shows; including most recently "Shine" featured on ABC's Rebel staring Katy Sagal, "Starfighter" on Showtime's Shameless, "I Got A Fever" on USA's Colony, and MTV's The Challenge.
