Morrigan Crow is the main character in The Nevermoor series, a fantasy literature series written by Jessica Townsend. Morrigan grew up in the Wintersea Republic, where, because she was born on Eventide day, she was pegged as a “cursed child” and was set to die eleven years later. However, on that day, Morrigan is saved from the Hunt of Smoke and Shadow, the group that hunts cursed children, by Jupiter North, a member of the prestigious Wundrous Society in the mystical, bustling city of Nevermoor.[1]

North inserts her in a series of trials to determine the next group of Wundrous Society members, and she becomes part on Unit 919, along with eight others. Morrigan is a Wundersmith, meaning she can control the Wunder in the air around her. She is trained partially by Ezra Squall, the previous Wundersmith who was forcefully banned from the city of Nevermoor after causing a massacre in Courage Square.

Fictional Biography[edit]

Morrigan is a cursed child in the Wintersea Republic, set to die in exactly one year when Eventide comes. However, the magical clock tower announces that this age, Eventide will come a year early, on Morrigan's eleventh birthday. When the day comes, she is somber but the rest of the family is happy that she will finally be out of their lives (her father, as a politician, sees Morrigan as bad luck on his career). However, when it is midnight and Morrigan is preparing to die, the mysterious Jupiter North arrives at her doorstep and takes her away to the city of Nevermoor, cheating death and the Hunt of Smoke and Shadow at the same time. In Nevermoor, Jupiter smuggles Morrigan past the border and lets her stay in his hotel, while preparing for her to participate in the Wundrous Trials, which will narrow down 500 kids to one group of nine, which will be in the next unit—Unit 919—in the Wundrous Society, a mystical society that presides over the city of Nevermoor.

Morrigan makes it through all the trials, though: during the Book Trial, Morrigan is able to answer the Nevermoorian quiz questions correctly and honestly. During the Chase Trial, Morrigan rides Fenestra, a giant Magnificat and the head of housekeeping at the Deucalion's hotel, to the finish line on the race, though her spot in the prestigious Wundrous Society Elders' dinner is lost when mesmerist Cadence Blackburn cheats her out of it. Morrigan powers through the Fear Trial, just barely escaping a band of evil witches with her best friend, Hawthorne Swift, and having another encounter with Cadence. However, at the Show Trial, where Morrigan still has not deduced what her knack is yet, Jupiter talks to the Elders, convincing them to let Morrigan be a part of the society until he can find nine signatories to realize her citizenship in the free state.

Past Wundersmiths[edit]

Before Morrigan and Squall, there have been many Wundersmiths. Originally, there were nine, and they were reborn into new bodies when they died.[1] Though Squall is believed to be the worst after massacring Courage Square, Professor Hemingway Q. Onstald wrote about other Wundersmiths including Decima Kokoro and her Cascade Towers, a set of skyscrapers made entirely of water, and Odbouy Jemmity, who crafted an entire amusement part and never let anyone in. However, Jupiter shows Morrigan that these "fiascos" as they've been pegged, are actually special to a certain group of people, because Jemmity Park is open to only those who deserve it and the Cascade Towers were never meant to be walked in, just seen, as they are beautiful as they are.

Family[edit]

Morrigan was born in the Wintersea Republic, to her father, Corvus Crow, a politician who dislikes Morrigan because of her curse, and her late and unnamed mother who does not appear in the series. Corvus remarries to Ivy Crow (née unknown) and they have twins, Guntram and Wolfram, after Morrigan leaves to see the Free State. Morrigan is able to visit them along the Gossamer Line in Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow. Morrigan has a very harsh relationship with her entire family as they hate her because of the Eventide curse, but is close with her grandmother Ornella before traveling away with Jupiter North. Most of her family's names are unknowns but one of her distant relatives names is Carrion Crow.
