Mose Jones, Jr. (born March 28, 1952), is an American politician who served as the first African American County Commissioner for Alabama’s Lawrence County District 1[1] from 1986 to the present. Lawrence County has a total area of 717 square miles with 691 square miles of land and 27 square miles of water and is the most rural county.

The District 1 of Lawrence County includes Courtland, North Courtland, Hillsboro, and Town Creek in the state of Alabama.

He is a member of the Alabama Democratic Conference (ADC) and has served for the past 25 years as chairman of the Lawrence County ADC. He has served as rotating chairman of the Board of Lawrence County Commissioners (rotating 4-year term), in which he has served 8 terms.

Early Life, Education and Career

Jones was born in Town Creek, Alabama and grew up on a farm that was typical of the Red Bank Community[2] sharecropper territory. After spending his youth working on the farm and graduating from high school, he took a job at 3M to take care of his family. He later was elected into political office as County Commissioner of Lawrence County District 1 and graduated from the Alabama County Commissioners College through the Association of County Commissions of Alabama at Auburn University’s Center for Governmental Services. He began his career as a politician in 1986 and has been in office ever since.

County Commissioner of Lawrence County District 1

Jones is the first black person to be elected as the commissioner of the Lawrence County Commission of District 1. He was elected to office in December 1985, and he has been the commissioner from January 1986 till present. He is the first and only black member of Lawrence County Commission with the highest years of impact and quality service.[3]

He has won 8 consecutive elections unopposed in 2010, with only one runoff in 2014, which was easily won. Mose is a member at large of the State Democratic. He served as the chairman of the 4th district of ADC and Lawrence County ADC. He is an ex officio member (at-large) of the State Democratic Party.[4][5]

Mose has influenced many changes in Lawrence County districts since he was first elected as a commissioner. He secured a grant to build a community park - Red Bank Community Park and Walking Trail. He paved roads in district 1, estimated 120 miles of new pavement 40, miles of county roads, and the roads named after 3 Vietnam Veterans.

Mose worked in collaboration with commissioners of each Lawrence County district to enable construction of new buildings for the health department,[6] department of human resources, courthouse, county jail, farmer’s market in Lawrence County; and purchase of computers for the courthouse. The Mose Jones Jr. Bridge is named after him, which in 2000 was constructed in Town Creek, Alabama on County Road 314 by the State of Alabama after 10 years of working towards the funding with the governors, legislatures, and United States Senators.

Personal life

Jones is married to Ella Mae (Reed) Jones. They have five children: Shaffer Jones, Christopher Jones, Sharona Jones, Dr. April Jones, and Jalisa Jones. They have four grandchildren: Alliyah Jones, Jaylynn Jones, Tyra Jones, and Tori Jones.
