Moss Ball Pets is an American company that sells marimo balls as aquatic houseplants.[1] Marimo are a growth form of the algae Aegagropila linnaei and have a distinct round shape and soft texture.[2][3]

The business owner noticed the species being marketed as "pets" in Japan and decided to bring the concept to the United States.[4]

Development[edit]

Joshua Buscay began selling Moss Ball Pets with the help of his family and friends in 2016.[1] Buscay has likened his Moss Ball Pets to other popular pet trends such as Pet Rocks and Sea Monkeys.[1]

Moss Ball Pets require little to no maintenance. Marimo grow through photosynthesis.[2] They require minimal interaction once bought.[1]

After gaining some notoriety for his product, the owner of Moss Ball Pets was invited to Facebook headquarters (Menlo Park, California).[4] In 2018, Buscay went to Menlo Park and during the time he spent there, hundreds of Moss Ball Pets found homes with Facebook employees. Some of the Moss Ball Pets (and their terrariums) were given away for free.[4]
