Motorpoint is a car dealer group founded in Derby, England. As of 2024, the company has 21 stores across the United Kingdom. It deals in nearly new and used cars. It also operates a direct-to-trade car auction platform called Auction4Cars.
History
Motorpoint was founded in 1998 by Gary Warren and David Shelton at a single site in Derby. At first, it sold parallel imports as an alternative to purchasing officially imported UK-specification vehicles. Following extensive coverage on the BBC’s Rip Off Britain series, which highlighted the price gap between UK and European car markets, the company recorded over 1,000 sales within the subsequent 60-day period.
In 1999 it launched a then-novel car finance plan called Boomerang, one of the first examples of a personal contract purchase (PCP) scheme, giving customers the option to hand back their car at the end of their agreement, buy it outright or use accrued equity to purchase their next car.
In 2000, Motorpoint opened a national call centre, allowing customers to buy their cars over the phone.
Between 2001 and 2006 Motorpoint opened a further 4 stores in Burnley, Glasgow, Newport and Peterborough, becoming the first car retailer to sell to every postal area in England.
In 2008, Motorpoint launched Auction4Cars – an auction platform that sells cars directly to the wholesale motor trade. Auction4Cars currently operates from 11 Motorpoint sites in the UK.
The business continued to grow from 2012 to 2013 and Motorpoint opened stores in Birmingham and Chingford. In 2013, Motorpoint appointed Mark Carpenter as Group CEO after serving two years as the company’s CFO. It opened its Widnes site in 2014 and its Birtley store in 2015, taking the total number of Motorpoint dealerships to nine.
On 13 May 2016 Motorpoint floated on the London Stock Exchange, raising £100m with a share price of 200p during the IPO. It opened stores in Castleford and Oldbury in the same year.
Motorpoint continued its expansion between 2017 and 2020, opening stores in Sheffield, Swansea and Teesside, as well as opening a new head office in Derby. The business launched a home delivery service within weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic hitting, delivering more than 1,000 cars during the UK’s lockdown.
As the pandemic waned in 2021, Motorpoint opened its 15th site in Manchester, followed by stores in Maidstone and Portsmouth in 2022. In 2023, marking 25 years of operation, the company expanded into Edinburgh, Coventry, and Ipswich..
In 2024, Motorpoint rolled out its first in-house MOT testing facility at its Coventry store and opened its 21st store in Norwich.

As of 2024, Motorpoint operates 21 retail sites across England, Scotland, and Wales, including locations in major cities such as Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, and Sheffield.
Awards and recognition
The company has received industry recognition for its digital presence and workplace culture, including being named "Car Supermarket of the Year" and the "UK’s number one independent car retailer" by Motor Trader Magazine in 2013 and 'Ultimate Digital Car Supermarket' by Auto Trader in 2014. Motorpoint has also appeared on the Sunday Times ‘Top 100 Best Companies to Work For’ list eight times. In 2023, the Financial Times recognised Motorpoint as one of “Europe’s Climate Leaders.”
Sponsorships
Since 2016, Motorpoint has been the name sponsor of the Nottingham Arena, the biggest live entertainment venue in the East Midlands. Motorpoint formerly sponsored the Cardiff Arena, the Sheffield Arena and the British Supersport Championship.
