Moving Still
Moving Still is the stage name of Jamal Sul,[1] a Saudi-Irish[2] music producer and DJ.
Biography[edit]
Sul grew up in Jeddah[3] before moving to Dublin at age 14.[4] He started making music as Moving Still while completing an immunology PhD in Trinity College Dublin.[5] While initially leaning towards electronic/ambient sounds with his debut release[6] with Dublin collective wherethetimegoes, he made his first edit for personal use in DJ sets, saying:
I was supporting [reissue specialists] Habibi Funk and dropped the original of Sarya Sawa’s “Bas Asma3 Mini.” The place went mental. The only thing that appeared missing to me was modern quality – it was an absolute nightmare to mix with, so later that week I decided to put drums and a bassline on it.[7]
The resulting edit was the first of three releases with label Dar Disku Records, pressed to vinyl in 2020[8] with festival favourite[9] Sidi Mansour (Moving Still Edit).
He credits fellow musician and broadcaster Nabihah Iqbal as being "the first person to give [him] an opportunity to play for her NTS show back in 2017".[3] Sul has had a monthly show on Dublin Digital Radio since 2019,[10] and Palestine's Radio Al Hara since 2020.[11]
His original music is heavily influenced by traditional Arabic rhythms and instruments, with mizmar lead lines as a feature across the releases along with acid basslines.[12]
