Mr. Poop is the alias given to an unidentified man who repeatedly defecated in public during 2019 in the Akihabara district in Tokyo, Japan.[1]
He defecated in public 10 times between April and June 2019 near utility poles, stores, and alleyways.[2][3] It is believed that Mr. Poop acted intentionally because there were 3 public toilets within a 300 m (980 ft) radius of where he defecated.[3]
Events
Mr. Poop first defecated near Chatora, a model railroad shop owned by Kosaku Nakajima. Nakajima discovered the feces underneath a pane of glass after smelling it through the store's window.[4]
The next case happened at a popular restaurant on Chuo-dori street.[5]
He struck a third time at a store directly across from Chatora. The feces was found at the entrance of the building.[4][5]
In the fourth incident, the perpetrator pooped at the base of a utility pole.[5]
In two subsequent incidents, Mr. Poop returned to Chatora to defecate again and Kosaku Nakajima saw him, on the second occasion, he was able to take a photo of him. He hung up posters advising people to call the police if they see the perpetrator.[4]
The final incident happened at yet another store, where feces was discovered near it.
The suspect
The suspect has been seen by multiple witnesses who caught him pooping in an alleyway. He is described as being in his thirties, had black pants on, and wore a blue backpack.[1]
Hideo Yamada, a lawyer, believes that it could be difficult for police to charge the suspect with a crime. Although he defecated on private property, the areas are frequently crossed by pedestrians, so trespassing may not be applicable. However, if it's proven the perpetrator is a repeat offender, he could be charged with disruption of business.[5]
Other cases
Mr. Poop is often compared to "The Thursday Man", another serial defector who smeared his feces on women in Osaka during 2011. The perpetrator only struck on Thursdays, and would flee on bike or foot. However, it's believed that the Thursday man's crimes were sexually motivated, and that the perpetrator used the act of smearing his excrement on women as a substitute for sex.[6] There has been no indication that Mr. Poop's crimes were sexually motivated.
