Mudiare Onome Onobrakpeya is the Director of Art and Culture and Head Curator at the Harmattan Gallery, Lagos, Nigeria, and is an advocate of artists and a curator of African Art and culture. He is a valiant steward of the visual arts and creative industry with over 30 years of involvement in various aspects of modern and contemporary African Art development in Nigeria and the U.S.A.
Mudiare opened his first gallery in the famous Nubery street in Boston, U.S.A. in l990 and since then he has been associated with several platforms of expression for artists, which have fostered enduring relationships in the arts across several countries.
Onobrakpeya was born into the family of Bruce and Eloho Onobrakpeya on June 8, 1965 at the Island Hospital in Lagos. He is married to Katherine (née Akinjole), and blessed with children.
Mudiare was educated at Corona Nursery and Primary School in Lagos, between1969 and 1976, he attended St Gregory's College Obalende, Lagos, from 1976 to 1983. He studied for his undergraduate degree in Economics at the University of Lagos after which he was awarded a B. Sc ( Honours) degree in 1987. He was awarded a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) after attending Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH. U.S.A. in 2006. On Oct. 2019, he was conferred with the honourary degree of Doctor of Science, (Honoris Causa) by the African American University in Porto Novo, Benin Republic for contributions in Art Business and Entrepreneurship in the creative industry.
Mudiare is the publisher of “Adumadan Arts Beats”, a specialized newsletter in the arts established in the late 90s, Adumadan was an early pioneer in deepening and accentuating the discourse on the true earning potential of the creative industry in West Africa, by being an advocate for innovative and modern art business thinking.
As an Art ambassador at large, Mudiare took modern Nigerian Art to the international stage, including such countries as Senegal, Ghana, Kenya, U.K. and the U.S. Thanks to his innovative leadership and outreach, the Nigerian art community has achieved new successes as a result of their engagement of great cultural and artistically inspired works.
Mudiare is an avid Art collector and Custodian of African art, and takes interest in world Art especially the visual arts. He is also commitment to art education and scholarship. Mudiare has ultimately enriched the earning power of many players in the creative industry. through his art coiumn Art Business with Mudiare Onobrakpeya which ran for several years.
He is a trustee of the Art Managers Association of West Africa, a premier West African art dealership, Art Asset management and Art Advisory organization
