Career[edit]
Ahmed Khan's name is synonymous with the leading designers of Pakistan since the early 60s through the 80s, and he is thought of as Pakistan’s greatest living calligraphic artist. Khan graduated with a distinction from NCA in 1963 and joined the faculty as a Lecturer in graphic design. In his professional career, Khan excelled as a printmaker. His work is contained in many important national and international collections. He was the first to introduce three dimensional elements on canvas and he also created outstanding sculptures. He continues to focus on his work in his Lahore studio.[3]
Work[edit]
Ahmed Khan’s luminous paintings in which traditional interpretation of line and form are reassessed as calligraphic design, assimilate a unique and complex process. Years of experimentation with chemicals and silver foil manipulated by the artist’s expertise resulted in work that is unique and stands out for its beauty. His work comprises overlaid calligraphic designs based on silver foil pressed on canvas which with a sprinkle of chemicals turns them into vibrant colours, and this base is used to apply his unique calligraphic forms. Ahmed Khan’s renditions spark with spirituality. It is the oneness of God and a matter of peace which takes place on his canvases. With passing years, he tends more towards philosophizing upon metaphysical element in his work.[3][4]
His compositions are famous for ovals, circles and semi circles with splashes of mystifying light creating an impression close to what Khan is going through metaphysically. Another obvious symbol on his canvases is a seal, a small motif in various colours as per requirement of colour aesthete adds beauty as well as sanctity to the paintings. He stresses on the colour and technicalities of his paintings. Besides his concept, Khan’s compositions, his lettering and colours appeal to the eye and render a value for the future.[3][4]
