Muhammad Shafique (Urdu: محمد شفیق; born 9 April 1936) is a Pakistani doctor and is most known for his work in Psychiatry.
Early life
Youth and education
Muhammad Shafique was born on 9th April 1936 in Jalandhar, India. He was the son of Fazal Karim, who belonged to Multan, and had a business running in Jalandhar. He has a sister and a brother, and two half sisters and two half brothers from his father's second marriage. He migrated to Pakistan in September 1947 when he was 11 years old during the partition of India. Afterwards he did his matriculation from Islamia High School, Aam-u-khaas bagh, Multan, in 1951 and FSC from Government Emerson College, Multan in 1953. He graduated from Nishtar Medical College in 1959, at the time Dr. Jamal Bhutta being the principal, and then later Dr. Hafiz Toosi.
1961-1986
Muhammad Shafique then went to England and did his post graduation (DPM) in psychiatry in September 1961. Coming back from England, he was appointed as the first Medical Superintendent in Government Mental Hospital, Dhodial, Mansehra. He was in fact the first employee of the half-built hospital, appointed on 3rd August 1964.
In 1965, he married Dr. Jamal Ara who was then working in Abbotabad.
After five years of working and developing the mental hospital he was appointed as Medical Superintendent in the Peshawar Mental Hospital. After a period of 8-9 months he transferred to the Lahore Mental Hospital as an Administrator in 1971.
After 2 years he was transferred back to the Peshawar Mental Hospital and worked there for 4 years, and was also a visiting psychiatrist in The Lady Reading Hospital. Because there was no established Outpatient department (OPD) for psychiatry, he started his own OPD sitting under a tree in Lady Reading.
In 1976 he was posted as Assistant Professor Psychiatry in Khyber Medical College, and continued to work there as a professor until his retirement in 1996.
Works and Achievements
- Muhammad Shafique laid down the foundation of the Psychiatric Ward in Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) with the help of General Tikka Khan as a 6-bedded hospital, which gradually increased to 32 beds.
- He initiated lectures of psychology, psychiatry and neurology in Khyber Medical College.
- He started psychiatric post-graduate training in his ward. He was one of the first examiners of the post graduate exam of psychiatry in Pakistan.
- He was the first psychiatrist of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), and the third senior most psychiatrist of Pakistan.
- He was the first doctor to initiate the dealing of mental patients in prisons, who were labelled as criminals. At one time, he was the only doctor who was doing medico-legal cases of psychiatric cases all over KPK.
- A new unit was started under UN drug abuse program under him in Khyber Teaching Hospital.
