Muhammed Majeed, PhD (born 1948) is an American scientist, philanthropist and entrepreneur.[1] He is the founder and Chairman of the Sami-Sabinsa group, a multinational manufacturer, supplier and marketer of nutraceutical ingredients and standardized herbal extracts.[2]

Early life and education[edit]

Dr. Muhammed Majeed was born to Mrs. Fathima Beevi and Mr. Majeed in Kollam district in Kerala, India. He lost his father at the age of 12, and his mother was his main influence, fostering his commitment to education.[3]

Dr. Majeed received his undergraduate degree in pharmacy from the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram in 1973. After working for a short period in Thiruvananthapuram, in 1975 he emigrated to the United States. He obtained his Master's degree in Industrial Pharmacy from the Long Island University, New York in 1980. He also pursued his doctorate in Industrial Pharmacy at St. John’s University, New York, graduating in 1986 while working for pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer, Carter-Wallace, and Paco Research.[4]

Career[edit]

In 1988, Dr. Majeed established Sabinsa Corporation in the state of New Jersey with the objective of importing and marketing generic drugs into the US for the drug molecules coming off patent.[3][5] Soon afterwards, he introduced into the US market a new line of products based on Indian botanicals. In 1991, he returned to India and established Sami Labs at Singasandra in Bengaluru as a research and development facility. Majeed reverse merged Sabinsa Corporation with Sami Labs to be the sales and marketing arm of the organization. Dr. Majeed holds close to 200 US and international patents, and several more in process.[6]

In 2010, Dr. Majeed founded a direct marketing entity called Sami Direct directly offering clinically approved nutraceutical products.[5] In 2015, Dr. Majeed also introduced the premium beauty brand through Sami Direct called Johara Cosmetics.[7]

The Dr. Majeed Foundation was launched in 2004 to educate underprivileged children. This foundation supports children from poor families for their education. The foundation also supports schools, colleges and training institutions which require financial aid to run efficiently, in addition to events associated with creating awareness in areas of human rights, civil rights, and social progress.

Dr. Majeed is credited with playing a significant role in shaping the nutraceutical industry in the United States. He was honored for his pioneering role in building the nutraceuticals industry as he was inducted into the Hall of Legends at Natural Products Expo.[8][9]
