Mullvad is a personal virtual private network (VPN) service launched in 2008 in Sweden employing techniques to assist users in maintaining privacy.
History[edit]
Mullvad was launched in March 2009 by Amagicom AB.[1] Mullvad's blog indicates they have been willing to accept anonymous bitcoin payments since July 2010.[2]
Mullvad was an early adopter of the OpenVPN client[citation needed] Mullvad was an early adopter of the Wireguard protocol, announcing it was making servers available from March 2017[3] and also in 2017 making a donation to development of the protocol in its relatively early stages of development.[4]
A Techradar article in November 2018 indicated Mullvad was one of five VPN providers who provided answers to a set of trustworthiness questions posed by the Center for Democracy and Technology.[5][6]
Service[edit]
Mullvad has always supported connections via the OpenVPN protocol, however, as of March 2017[update], it also added support for WireGuard.[7][8]
As of May 2019[update] a review noted Mullvad has 373 servers over 31 countries and were offering 5 simultaneous connections.[9] One review in June 2017 were noting over 100 servers across 22 countries while another noted 82 servers.[10][8]
Privacy[edit]
Mullvad emphasises on its website that "privacy is a universal right" and they claim their VPN service allows users to keep their "online activity, identity, and location private".[11]
In addition to best privacy practices such as no server logging Mullvad is noted by reviews for not requiring an email to register for the service.[9][10] As Mullvad is within the jurisdiction of Sweden which is one of the Fourteen Eyes countries this is an important criteria for remaining anonymous though would need to be combined by using cyptocurrency payment for services.[9]
Both Bitcoin and Cash anonymous payment methods are accepted in addition to other methods that are not anonymous.[12]
Criticisms[edit]
While Mullvad has been noted for taking a strong approach to privacy and maintaining good connection speeds the vpn client setup and interface has been noted as being more onerous and technically involved than some other VPN providers especially on some client platforms.[9][10]
A Techradar review in March 2019 noted slightly substandard speeds for Mullvad VPN, another reviews has now noted a problem.[12][9]
