Multimedia cloud
Multimedia cloud computing comes from the multimedia aware-cloud. A multimedia aware-cloud addresses how a multimedia cloud can perform distributed multimedia processing and storage of the multimedia process and provide quality of service. To provide a High Quality of service for multimedia services, we propose an architecture called media-edge cloud (MEC) in which storage, the central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU) cluster are presented at the edge to provide distributed parallel processing and quality of service (QoS) adaptation for various types of devices.
Now we present a cloud-aware multimedia, that is, how multimedia services and applications such as storage, sharing, authoring, mash-up and delivery, rendering and retrieval, can optimally utilize cloud computing resources for better quality of services (QoS).
Cloud computing is an emerging technology providing various storage and computing services over the internet. Cloud computing is a platform and generally incorporates infrastructure and software as service(SaaS). By using cloud computing, users can store and retrieve their data, software, media and many other things in the cloud using the internet instead of storing their data in local drives. The users can run their applications more efficiently on cloud computing platforms with software deployed in the cloud.
The internet multimedia is emerging as a service with the development of Web 2.0. To provide rich media service, the multimedia service introduces a technology to generate, edit, and search media content such as video, music, pictures, files and graphics. There is a strong demand for cloud computing for multimedia applications and services over the internet because of the large amount of computation required for serving millions of internet and mobile users at the same time. In cloud-based multimedia computing, users can store and process their multimedia application data in the cloud in a distributed manner and do not need a full installation of the media application software on the user devices.
The fundamental challenges for multimedia computing
- Multimedia and service heterogeneity.
- QoS heterogeneity.
- Network heterogeneity.
- Device heterogeneity.
In cloud computing, the cloud uses a mechanism to allocate computing and storage resources based on need, which is useful for general data services. In addition to performance for CPU and storage requirements, the important factor is the quality of service in terms of delay and bandwidth. Mobile devices have some limitations for computing and battery life, so cloud computing has become an established technology for mobile devices. The multimedia computing in the cloud is how to provide the quality of services (QoS) and support for the multimedia application and services over the internet connection (i.e.) wired internet and mobile internet.
Fundamental concept of multimedia cloud computing
The principle concepts of multimedia cloud computing for multimedia computing and communication are specifically proposed for a multimedia cloud computing framework to provide multimedia applications and services over the internet and mobile internet with QoS. Cloud aware multimedia focuses on how the multimedia performs the storage, processing, and etc.
MULTIMEDIA AWARE-CLOUD:
The media cloud needs to have the following functions:
- Support for various types of multimedia services and Quality of services of the multimedia service with different requirements,
- Multimedia quality of services (QoS) to adapt to various types of devices and network bandwidth,
- Distributed parallel multimedia processing.
Media cloud computing architecture
We handle multimedia computing form a quality of service (QoS) perspective of an MEC computing architecture. In cloud, the server is physically placed at the edge to provide media service with high quality of service to users. The MEC architecture is similar to CDN Edge server architecture where CDN is for multimedia delivery and MEC is for multimedia computing to the users. So that compared to all multimedia content in the centre of the server, the multimedia computing in an MEC can produce less traffic.
There are two types of Architecture in MEC
- 1st type: All user data is stored in the MECs based on the user profile and content location is communicated by its head through P2P.
- 2nd type: The central Administrator maintains all the associated users details and the content location where the MEC distributedly holds all the content within the MEC.
In P2P architecture each node is very important where the MEC has high scalability and availability for media computing and media storage.
Distributed parallel multimedia processing
Multimedia processing is conducted on client and server with multimedia processing, and multimedia cloud computing is basically on the third party cloud data center. The big challenge of multimedia cloud computing is how a cloud can provide a distributed parallel processing of multimedia data of thousands of users including the wired and wireless users (mobile users). So, multimedia computing and multimedia storage need to be executed in a distributed and parallel way to overcome this problem. We use DHT for media data storage in the storage cluster and implement a multimedia processing program parallel execution program with media load balance for media computing in GPU or CPU cluster. Assigning a different key to a data to track the data manages how media data will be distributed multimedia processing for large scale multimedia programs which use MEC.
Quality of service in media cloud
The QoS-Quality of service is the main key challenge in the media cloud. We can provide a better quality of service by using two methods: add QoS within the infrastructure and between the cloud infrastructure and multimedia application to support multimedia application and service with the different medias. It checks to improve the quality of service of cloud in the middle layer such as QoS in the transport layer and the QoS mapping between the cloud infrastructure and media application. There are more researches going on in the cloud infrastructure QoS area.
Multimedia cloud storage
The cloud storage is always UP so that the users can access the file, upload, download, share and so on. The users can access the files from anywhere from any device over the internet connection. Compared to the local storage, the cloud storage provides a high level of reliability.
Two types of storage methods
- consumer oriented service.
- developer oriented service.
The consumer oriented services are that the cloud provider deployed their own server for the storage that is storage service is on its own that is "Pay-only service". The investment plays a major role in software or service.
Applications of cloud-aware multimedia
In high professional organizations, the high quality media contents could only be acquired with efficient devices. The other distribution of media is used in hard copies like VCD, DVD, CD. A low cost digital camera and camcorders has sparked an explosion of user generated media content. New cyber physical systems have made a new way of data acquiring over sensor networks which increase the diversity and the volume of media data files. On the web 2.0 wave, digital media data can be easily distributed through the internet connection. The biggest success for youtube, gmail and other cloud storage services demonstrates the popularity of the internet media. In early days, media storage was provided by the various service providers with their server farms, but now every service provider has a choice to be a user of public clouds. For small business, pay as you go is the choice of the public cloud users.
