Murder of Simon Shotton
On Saturday 26 August 2023, partial human remains were discovered in Boscombe, Dorset, England.[1] Other partial human remains were located in three other locations across the Boscombe area. Police discovered the body parts belonged to 49-year-old Simon Shotton. On 4 September, 38-year-old Debbie Ann Pereira and 48-year-old Benjamin Lee Atkins, both from Boscombe, were charged with Shotton's murder.[1]
Incident
On 26 August 2023 at approximately midday, a woman walking up the Manor Steps Zig Zag path from Boscombe beach located human legs. At approximately 1.10pm, police were called.[1] Scientific analysis identified the legs belonged to Shotton. As a result of investigating Shotton, police found he had been living at an address in Bournemouth. When police searched this address, further human remains were located. Police set up cordons at two addresses; one at Manor Road and another at Aylesbury Road in Boscombe.[2]
Additional human remains were located at approximately 10:45am on 6 September in the area of Boscombe Chine Gardens, near to Boscombe Pier.[3]
Investigation and legal proceedings
On 4 September, Pereira and Atkins were charged with Shotton's murder. Pereira and Atkins appeared at Poole Magistrates Court the following day, on 5 September.
On 6 September, Pereira and Atkins appeared via video link in front of Judge William Mousley KC at Bournemouth Crown Court. Judge Mousley did not set a provisional trial date, but remanded the couple in custody until a further hearing scheduled for 20 October.[4]
