Murray Sigler

Murray Sigler (born March 1948) is a prominent Canadian businessman and Calgarian philanthropist.

Career

Sigler began his professional career as a lawyer in private practice at a medium-sized firm serving both Alberta and the Northwest Territories. He articled with the Right Honourable Mark M. deWeerdt, Q.C.. Sigler went on to become a partner at Searle Sigler by 1977. Sigler was President of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories and Director of the Canadian Bar Association (1974 to 1975).

He was appointed corporate counsel for PWA Corporation in 1977, and became Senior Vice President in 1984, which led to his transition to other senior executive roles in the aviation industry and beyond.

He served as President and COO of Canadian Pacific Airlines (1980 to 1987), and Canadian Airlines International (formerly CPA) from 1988 to 1993. Sigler also became CEO of Canadian Regional Airlines from 1991 to 1993. He founded Altius Corporation in 1993, and has served as the private investment and consulting firm's Principal since. Sigler became the President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority from 1996 to 2002. From 2002 to 2005, Sigler was the CEO and President of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.

Sigler became the Managing Director of the Alberta United Kingdom Office from 2005 to 2009. He served as Alberta’s senior diplomatic and commercial representative in the UK, with offices co-located in the High Commission of Canada. In 2009 until 2015, Sigler was the President of Axia North America and Axia SuperNet LTD, as well as Executive Vice President of Axia NetMedia Corporation. In 2020, Sigler returned to the Chamber of Commerce to serve as the Interim CEO and President.

Board Experience

Sigler has extensive corporate and non-profit board experience in Canada and internationally. He has served as a board member of the Calgary Airport Authority since 2014, including Chair of the Operations, Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE) Committee. Sigler is a past board member, Vice Chair and Acting Board Chair of Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) from 2002 to 2005.

Since its inception in 2018, he has held the position of Board Chair of Sport for Calgary Foundation. As well, Sigler serves as a board member and Chair of the Governance Committee for KidSport Calgary and Calgary Flames Sports Bank.

From 2010 to 2016, Sigler was on the board for Calgary Economic Development. He is a board member for Parks Foundation Calgary and Lindsay Park Sports Society, and vice chair of Calgary Film Centre LTD in 2014 to 2016.

Sigler is a past board member (2005 to 2009) and honourable lifetime member of the Canada/UK Chamber of Commerce.

Community Experience

Sigler is an active member of his community. He is a co-founding member of the Alberta’s History and Heroes Foundation (an initiative led by Lt Gov. Lois Mitchell). He is an active Member of City of Calgary Business Sector Task Force, as well as a Member of the Calgary Downtown Strategy Committee. Sigler is currently a Member of the Calgary City Council Standing Advisory Committee for Foothills Park Redevelopment (FAPRAC), including Multisport Fieldhouse major capital project.

Personal

Sigler graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science in 1969 and a Bachelor of Law (LLB) in 1970 through a combined program from the University of Alberta. Sigler was admitted to the Alberta bar and Northwest Territories bar in 1971. He remains an active member of the Law Society of Alberta. In 1984, Sigler graduated from Harvard University's Graduate School of Business in the Advanced Management Program (A.M.P.).
