Musa Makamu (born in the 1990s), popularly known by his artist name Musa Keys, is a South African DJ, record producer, songwriter, and singer. Keys is best known for his contribution to Amapiano. His most recognized works include "Samarian Boy" (which charted for nearly three months on MTV Base and in South Africa) and "Selema (PoPo)". Amapiano gained global recognition in 2021, with Keys as one of the genres' breakthrough artists. He has been tipped by Boiler Room (music broadcaster) to be 'the next global star on the scene.[1] [2]

Forbes also listed him in their 'Top 10 Amapiano artists', ranked at number 3 in 2021.[3]

Early life and career

Musa Makamu was born in Giyani, Limpopo Province’s northeastern area, and reared in Polokwane[4]. At the age of 13 he started playing the piano at church, and began performing music as a youngster.[5] It is for this reason he sometimes refers to himself as Tsonga Michael Jackson as he also started at a young age.[5][6] After his matric he studied Sound engineering at Damelin College and quit on the second year.[5]

In September 2021, Musa announced he was working on his debut studio album.[5]

His debut studio album Tayo was released on November 19, 2021.[7][8] The album was certified gold in South Africa.[9][10]

In June 2022, Keys was listed on Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 list.[11]
