The Museum of Rural Life is a project of the Caroline County Historical Society in Caroline County, Maryland in the town of Denton. The organization markets itself as a national leader in rural building preservation including Underground Railroad sites of interest. Fundraising is underway to expand the campus to include a visitor center as a starting point to visit notable historical locations in the county.
History[edit]
The front portion of the museum dates back to 1818 when it existed as the residence of Denton merchant Solomon Brown at 12 North Second Street. After changing hands multiple times, the house was relocated several blocks north in 1906. The Caroline County Historical Society (CCHS) moved the structure to its current location in 1991 and opened the first phase of the Museum of Rural Life (MRL) in 1993. The museum property now includes, under one roof, salvaged portions of three other houses: Skillington's Right, Chance's Desire, and Painter's Ridge.
