Music from Saharan Cellphones is a compilation album consisting of an assortment of songs collected from the memory cards of cellular phones in the Saharan desert.[1] It was one of the first releases by Sahel Sounds, an American record label based in Portland, Oregon which focuses on the culture of the Sahel region of Africa, particularly West Africa.[2]

Background[edit]

In the year 2010, various versions of Saharan cellphone music were released on cassette tape. Much of these songs were unlabeled, which gave no insight to where they specifically came from. Following the surfacing of these obscure music recordings, their artists were successfully located for the purpose of collaboration on what would become Music from Saharan Cellphones.[3]

The songs were collected from different countries in Northern and Western Africa, including Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, Algeria, Niger, Morocco and Nigeria.[4]

Music style[edit]

The songs of Music from Saharan Cellphones showcase a wide range of regional styles of music. The genres featured are coupé-décalé, Tuareg rock, African hip hop, Kuduro, Raï, Berber music and Shaabi.[5][6][7][8][9][10]
