Music massage therapy
Music Massage Therapy.
Developed by Clodagh Irish from Waterford, Ireland in June 2012.
Music massage therapy is a choreographed massage to specific music. Techniques used are loosely based on holistic massage, but are adapted to work in rhythm with and flow to the music.
The therapist's role in Music Massage Therapy is to act as a mediator between the person receiving the massage and the music. The music is turned up loud and is the focus of the massage, the idea is to totally immerse the recipient in glorious music, and help them to connect with the music in a way which is not normally possible. The therapist is there to aid the recipient to connect deeply with the music.
Each session is unique, there is no generic music that can be used for the massage. The Therapist must have a good knowledge of music and must intuitively know what mood the music has, what songs will work together and how to build the massage to a climax, as the success of the massage lies in that knowledge.
This type of massage has a number of different purposes, dependent on what the client wants.
1. To heal any emotional baggage the person might be holding on to, by immersing them in music that will bring out those emotions and help to clear them.
2. To relax the person in a deeper way than a typical massage, in that, the music takes their mind on a journey and allows them to rest in a place of deep spiritual connection with the music.
3. To take the recipient on a nostalgic trip. Music can have special memories associated with it, so this form of massage can be a way of intensively re-visiting those memories, through nostalgic songs and the intimate sense of touch that the massage provides, which will guide the person deep into their associated memories.
4. Music brings out certain emotions and moods in people, so this massage can be used to put the person into a state of bliss, deep relaxation, spiritual connection, emotional clearing or can simply be a different kind of massage for the music enthusiast to help to connect deeply with their favourite music and discover new music.
Each massage is adaptable to what the person receiving it requires, e.g. If they want to enliven all the senses, then aromatherapy oils of their choice can be added. Colour can also be used as part of the therapy, especially if the recipient associates colours with music or emotion. This is done by using coloured bulbs in a lamp so as to have the room lit in that particular colour, and bathe the "massagee" in music and colour.
In the case of both personalized and general music massages, each massage starts out with a pre-massage song for the recipient to get ready and settled, then after the massage is finished, there is 15 mins of music relevant to the massage but a little more upbeat to help wake the person up and give them time to slowly come round. Tea and a hot towel are then provided.
