Musings of an Uninspired Artist

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Musings of an Uninspired Artist is a 2022 zero budget indie film made by Indian filmmaker Ronit Jadhav. This is his second indie feature. The film was shot in May 2020, during the first COVID-19 lockdown, with no budget, no cast and no crew[1]. The film premiered at the 2nd Diorama International Film Festival[2], and since has been selected in 11 international film festivals.

Plot

In 2020, when the world is facing a global pandemic, an unnamed artist muses over his lack of inspiration. He is a filmmaker who's working for a film review website. Whatever little time he gets for himself, he spends in artistic pursuits like writing poems, short stories, sketching, and video making. During this time, he faces the stress of possible layoffs, a landlord demanding to be paid early, relationship troubles, all the while dealing with the existential dread of his own being. As the days pass by with seemingly no progress, he continues to question his craft, and his future.[3]

Development

By April 2020, Ronit Jadhav had already begun to feel the isolation and negativity of the lockdown affect him strongly. The mounting stress resulted in him channeling the same into making a film that tried to realistically document the feelings of isolation[4]. To further augment the feeling of isolation, the entire film takes place in just one room.

Filming

Ronit made use of his old Canon 600D camera to shoot the film, and his OnePlus3 as an audio recorder. Since he didn't have proper equipment to make this film with, he had to get creative, and therefore used screen-recordings and even his laptop camera[5].

While there was no formal script or screenplay, once the idea for the film developed, Ronit made a sequence of events, and that served as the script. That meant a lot of the film's scenes and dialogues were improvised, even the poems that the character types out on screen[5].

Editing

The lack of equipment meant that Ronit had to make use of his old laptop to edit the film and compose the music on free software. This meant that rendering and exporting took longer than usual, significantly slowing down the process. However, the first cut of the film was ready by August 2020.

Musings of an Uninspired Artist first premiered online, and was selected in 11 festivals over the course of a year.
