Criticisms[edit]

In 2011, Fred Muwema, the firm's founding partner, was interrogated by the Uganda Police Force, over billions of Shillings allegedly owed to Bunyoro tobacco farmers.[6] That was because in 2007, Muwema & Mugerwa had successfully represented these farmers in a suit against British American Tobacco, resulting in a USD 2M court settlement. The money was reportedly paid into Fred Muwema's account for transfer to the farmers, some of whom were then demanding for payment. He is alleged to have paid some of the 2000 farmers, leaving out others, who were then threatening to demonstrate.[6]
