Mzansi Taal (Pty) Ltd is an online South African dictionary and encyclopedia specialising in researching, capturing, defining and building a database of widely used informal and conversational words, terms and phrases.
Mzansi Taal is a multilingual platform and features words, terms and phrases which are used alongside the 11 official languages of South Africa for example, Tsotsi Taal, Spitori, Scamtho, Ringas and many other dialects from various regions across the country.
History[edit]
Mzansi Taal was founded in August 2017. On launch date Mzansi Taal had 10 unique words, terms and phrases published in the dictionary and has continually grown to over thousands developing it into a fully fledged specialised dictionary and encyclopedia platform.
Operations[edit]
Mzansi Taal uses corpus linguistics techniques meaning that there should be sufficient evidence of usage for the words, terms and phrases to be published into the dictionary.
Users may also suggest words, terms and phrases which they use or may have heard, these go through an internal quality control process. Words, terms and phrases which fit the criteria are edited and then published while those which do not are set aside.
Multimedia such as text, images, audio and video is also used where possible to support the definition.

The word Mzansi is commonly used to refer to South Africa. It is derived from the isiXhosa word Mzantsi which means ‘south’.
Logo[edit]
The logo is the shape of the South African geographic map with the title Mzansi Taal shaped using graffiti art style techniques.
The colours used are the green, black, white, gold, red, blue used on the official Flag of South African.
