Overview
The National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) is a 501(c)6 nonprofit trade association founded by Gary Acosta and Ernie Reyes in 1999, San Diego, CA[1]. NAHREP is dedicated to advancing sustainable homeownership among Latinos by educating and empowering the real estate professionals who serve them[2]. NAHREP is a nonpartisan organization and engages in policy advocacy. The organization is currently headquartered in San Diego.
Structure
The organization is structured as a nationwide network of local chapters split into six national regions, advised by a Board of Directors and Corporate Board of Governors. NAHREP has a network of over 40,000 professionals and over 100 chapters across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
Publications
NAHREP releases an annual State of Hispanic Homeownership Report[3], an annual State of Hispanic Wealth Report, a Top 250 Latino Mortgage Originators report and a Top 250 Latino Agents report.
State of Hispanic Homeownership Report
The State of Hispanic Homeownership Report is a publication of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals. The report is an industry benchmark that coalesces a broad cross-section of data and research from within and outside of the housing industry. The report provides an analysis of how the U.S. Hispanic population is faring with respect to attainment of homeownership in America. Additionally, it highlights Hispanic consumer nuances, purchase power, and trends, and provides insight into major factors that contributed to the story of Hispanic homeownership in the U.S. over the past year[4].
State of Hispanic Wealth Report
The State of Hispanic Wealth Report focuses on Hispanic participation in homeownership, small business development, and wealth building[5].
In 2014, NAHREP published the report with an audacious goal of tripling Hispanic household wealth within ten years[6]. The HWP Blueprint outlined three primary areas of focus and a series of goals: homeownership, small business, and savings and investments. The plan additionally referenced two distinct types of initiatives: NAHREP-recognized initiatives and NAHREP-driven initiatives. NAHREP-driven initiatives are undertaken by NAHREP or the HWP directly. In both cases, the resulting initiatives and their progress are included in the HWP Annual Report and are categorized by each component goal.
For the first time in 2020, the Hispanic Wealth Project commissioned a national survey that brings unique data to better understand the impact the COVID-19 pandemic may have on Latino household wealth. The findings of the report show the recovery and continued economic growth of Latino households, workers and businesses are inseparable from the country’s long-term growth and stability.
Top 250 Latino Real Estate Agents and Mortgage Originators Reports
The NAHREP Top 250 Latino Agents Reports and NAHREP Top 250 Mortgage Originators Reports rank Latino real estate professionals in America across multiple lists[7], including the 250 largest producers by sides on a national level, top 250 producers by volume on a national level, and top 100 producers by sides on a regional level across six geographic regions. The rankings are compiled through broker-affirmed self-nomination reflective of transactions closed during the previous calendar year. Nominations for the award open in early January. Agents and mortgage originators are encouraged to nominate themselves and any deserving colleagues for the honor. To be eligible, nominees are required to submit residential closed transaction counts and volume in order to rank against other nominees. Once received, NAHREP reviews the nominations for accuracy by validating against other available data, including MLS records and franchise data. NAHREP membership is not a prerequisite for participation or acknowledgement in the Top 250 Latino Agents and Mortgage Originators Awards.
Government Advocacy and Activity
In March 2011, NAHREP, along with two other organizations representing multicultural real estate professionals - the National Association of Real Estate Broker (NAREB) and the Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA) - convened at the Multicultural Real Estate & Policy Conference in Washington, D.C., to discuss regulatory and policy changes to preserve access to homeownership for people of color. As a result of that meeting the organizations issued a joint report entitled "The Five Point Plan: Refocusing the Future of Minority Homeownership"[8].
In 2015, NAHREP unveiled a plan to triple Latino wealth over the next 10 years through its Hispanic Wealth Project. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis predicted that Latino wealth could grow by $2 trillion in the next 10 years with projected gains in population if there’s an environment fostering wealth in the community[9].
In 2016, NAHREP announced that its then-director of research Alejandro Becerra was appointed to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’s first-ever Housing Counseling Federal Advisory Committee[10]. HUD states that the committee, consisting of 12 individuals representing mortgage, real estate, consumer and housing sectors, will serve to “improve the efforts to provide consumers with the knowledge they need to make informed and lasting housing decisions.”
