NGC 5591 is a large spiral galaxy located in the constellation Boötes. Its velocity relative to the cosmic microwave background is 7902±18 km/s, corresponding to a Hubble distance of 380 ± 27 Mly (116.6 ± 8.2 Mpc).[1] NGC 5591 was discovered by the American astronomer Lewis Swift in 1886.
NGC 5591 exhibits a broad H I line.[1] According to the SIMBAD database, NGC 5591 is a radio galaxy.[2] NGC 5591 is a galaxy whose nucleus is bright in the ultraviolet. It is listed in the Markarian catalog under the designation Mrk 809 (MK 809).[3]
In fact, this galaxy is a pair of galaxies[1] in gravitational interaction, consisting of NGC 5591 and PGC 93125. However, Swift’s description of it (very faint, small, and round) suggests that he observed only NGC 5591. At a distance of 379.2 ± 26.5 Mly (116.27 ± 8.14 Mpc),[4] PGC 93125 is therefore considered a companion galaxy rather than an object in the NGC.[5]
NGC 5587
NGC 5587 is a galaxy located near the interacting pair, but it is much closer than the other two galaxies. NGC 5587 is a Lenticular Galaxy with dust lanes.
