Career[edit]

Sayej started her career at The Globe and Mail newspaper in Toronto reporting on arts and culture[6]. In 2009, she started a YouTube show called ArtStars* TV, where she has interviewed artists like Peaches[7], Julian Schnabel,[8] John Waters[9] and Gilbert & George.[10] Sayej is noted for her “bubbly wit[11]” her “electrifying[12]” and ballsy personality[13] for crashing gallery openings[14]. Sayej has been described as a performance journalist[15] and a video blog queen[16] for comedic and explosive interviews[17]. She has called her approach Gonzo art criticism.[18]

In 2011, Sayej interviewed American cartoonist Robert Crumb for VICE Magazine[19] on his cover scandal with The New Yorkerr[20]. Crumb severed ties with the magazine in 2009[21] after he wasn't given a rejection for his gay marriage artwork depicting a drag queen and king in front of a marriage-license clerk[22].

In 2012, Sayej became known for a viral blog post on the ArtStars* blog calling out Documenta 13 curator Carolyn Christov Bakargiev's "press kit from hell"[23] which had 18 photos of the curator. She was noted for challenging the curator at the Documenta press conference[24] and coining the term "curator porn"[25].

Sayej has interviewed numerous celebrities including Susan Sarandon[26], Jean Paul Gaultier,[27] Pamela Anderson,[28] Dita Von Teese, [29] Yoko Ono, [30] Alyssa Milano[31], Bruce LaBruce, [32] Patti Smith[33], Bill Nye [34] and the first ever jpg interview with Douglas Coupland[35].

She has written on a number of topics including sexual misconduct in the art world[36] and fighting the gender imbalance on Wikipedia[37].

Her book The Celebrity Interview Book features interviews with 21 celebrities, which has been called witty[38], raw[39] and filled with comedic anecdotes[40].
