Wing Commander Namansh Syal (1991 – 21 November 2025) was an Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter pilot who was killed when a HAL Tejas aircraft he was flying crashed during a demonstration sortie at the Dubai Airshow 2025, held at the Al Maktoum International Airport in the United Arab Emirates.[1][2][3][4][5]

Early life and education

Syal was a native of Patialkad village in Nagrota Bagwan tehsil, located in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.[6][7][8] He completed his schooling at Sainik School Sujanpur Tira in Hamirpur district before joining the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot.[9][10]

Career

Syal served as a fighter pilot with the Indian Air Force and was posted in Hyderabad at the time of the accident.

He was regarded for his professionalism, discipline, and operational capability. Prior to the incident, he had been tasked with flying the indigenous HAL Tejas during its practice and demonstration schedule for the Dubai Airshow 2025.

Personal life

Syal was married to an Indian Air Force officer, and the couple had one daughter.[2] His father, Jagan Nath, was a retired Indian Army officer who later served as a school principal in the Himachal Pradesh Education Department.[11][10][12] His mother, Bina Devi, was also residing with the family in Hyderabad at the time of the incident.[13][14]

Death

On 21 November 2025, Syal was flying a HAL Tejas aircraft during a scheduled practice and demonstration sortie for the Dubai Airshow when the jet lost altitude and crashed near Al Maktoum International Airport.[15][16] The aircraft exploded on impact, resulting in Syal's death.[17][18][19] The Indian Air Force confirmed the fatality and announced that a court of inquiry had been initiated to determine the cause of the crash.[20][21]
