Name necklace
A name necklace (also known as a name plate necklace or a personalized name necklace) is a type of customized jewelry worn around the neck that displays the name of the person wearing it or that of someone significant to the wearer. The name on the pendant is engraved on the necklace and they come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. These ornaments are made from different types of precious metals which range from gold and silver name necklaces to gold plated and silver plated pendants.
As a result of their personal design, name necklaces are often considered as a special gift that can be used to express sentimental gestures in a more personalized manner. They are also considered to be creative fashion accessories that symbolically showcase a person’s individuality and traits.

Although necklaces in general have been around for about 40,000 years, name necklaces first came into existence in the 1980s, and were regarded as a sign of wealth and social class.[citation needed] The origin of name plate necklaces however has been linked to the freed slaves of the African-American community who decided to adopt unique names following their liberation after the end of World War II. These necklaces were initially worn by African-American , urban, hip-hop rappers who played a big role in making name necklaces fashionable ornaments to wear.
Famous celebrities such as J Lo, MC Hammer and Madonna are among theinfluential Hollywood stars that have helped to brand name necklaces as trendy fashion accessories, but it was until when Carrie Bradshaw, the well known actress from the HBO, hit TV series ‘Sex and the City’ was seen wearing a customized name necklace that these ornaments became increasingly popular. This led to the launch of the famous Carrie name necklaces, which is one of the popular lines of personalized jewelry. From then on, these necklaces have become a fashion craze amongst celebrity figures and the public as well.
The original name necklaces were rather simple in design only displaying the name, but as technology advanced jewelers became more equipped with tools that have contributed to creation of more sophisticated designs that entail detailed artwork. The name normally reads horizontally although there are those that come with an added twist of arranging the lettering vertically.
Types of name necklaces[edit]
- Metal Alloy - name pendants are usually described by the metal alloy used to make them. Although there are other metals used to make these necklaces, sterling silver and gold are mostly used with gold offering both yellow and white colors. A double thickness name necklace is made of bold font for enhanced durability.
- Embellishments - some of the common features that are incorporated into the design of modern necklaces include emended birthstones, diamonds and pearls. Some special designs even come with symbolic embellishments such as love heart shapes, monogram initials, flower shapes and even symbolic little cupid statues.
