Naphtali David Rishe (naftaˈli rɪˈʃe; born 1957) is a computer scientist and academic. He serves as a professor at Florida International University (FIU).
Rishe's research covers a range of areas, including semantic databases, geospatial database management, location-based data, health informatics, internet data extraction, high-performance computing, and computer medicine. He contributed to the development of TerraFly, a web-based service that enables querying of location-specific data and visualization of remote-sensed imagery. In 2021, he was elected a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.
Education
Rishe earned his B.S. in Computer Science from the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) in 1979, and his M.S. in Computer Science from the same institution in 1981. He went on to complete his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Tel Aviv University in 1984.[1]
Career
Rishe began his academic career at Tel Aviv University, where he taught from 1981 to 1984, followed by a faculty position at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 1984 to 1987. He joined Florida International University (FIU) in 1987 as an associate professor and was promoted to full professor in 1992. In 1994, he became the founding director of FIU's High-Performance Database Research Center, a position he continues to hold.[1] He was awarded the title of Outstanding University Professor at FIU in 2000.[2] His administrative roles at FIU have included directing the NSF International FIU-FAU-Greenwich Industry-University Cooperative Research Center for Advanced Knowledge Enablement (I/UCRC) from 2008 to 2022 and being chair of FIU's Forum of Outstanding Professors from 2012 to 2014, and since 2024.[1] He is also director of the FIU Health Information Technology Initiative.[3]
Beyond his roles in academia, Rishe worked as director of the NASA Regional Applications Center in Miami from 1997 to 2002. Subsequently, he directed the NSF CREST Center for Innovative Information Systems Engineering from 2008 to 2016.[1]
Research
Rishe's research in computer science has focused on database management and design, geospatial information systems, and health informatics.
Semantic data modeling and database design
Rishe's work on semantic data modeling began with the development of the software system Language of Textual Information Processing (LOTIP).[4] His research has examined how semantic models influence database flexibility and representation, introducing expressive non-procedural languages to enhance database functionality.[5] He also applied denotational semantics to unify database meaning across different levels of abstraction, using hierarchical mappings to translate less semantic representations into more semantically rich ones.[6]
In 1988, Rishe authored Database Design Fundamentals: A Structured Introduction to Databases and Structured Application Design Methodology, which outlined foundational principles and systematic methods for developing structured, application-oriented database systems.[7] His 1992 book, Database Design: The Semantic Modeling Approach, expanded on this work by examining database design through a semantic modeling framework, addressing semantic, relational, network, and hierarchical database architectures.[8]
Geospatial systems and spatial information retrieval
In collaboration with NASA, the USGS, and IBM, Rishe launched TerraFly in 2001 as a public web service developed at Florida International University (FIU).[9] The platform was designed to integrate, visualize, and query geospatial data through virtual flight simulation and multi-dimensional search capabilities. Among Rishe's key contributions to digital mapping were TerraFly's web-based navigation, methods for precisely aligning street overlays, and techniques for visualizing temporal change by morphing imagery captured across different time periods. The system was featured in the Miami Herald,[10] The New York Times,[11] and Science,[12] and has received approximately $30 million in funding from agencies including NASA[13] and the National Science Foundation.[14]
In 2007, Rishe showcased a project in Miami that combined satellite and street-level imagery to document Havana's architecture through geo-located building photography.[15] His research group also developed the IR2-Tree indexing structure, which supports geospatial keyword searches within spatial databases.[16]
Health informatics and biofeedback
Rishe's studies on heart rate variability demonstrated that, in young and healthy individuals, breathing and heart rate generally oscillate in phase,[17] with heart rate increasing during inhalation and decreasing during exhalation.[18]
Interactive systems and analytics
In 2016, Rishe co-authored Interaction Design for 3D User Interfaces: The World of Modern Input Devices for Research, Applications, and Game Development, which examined modern input technologies and their role in enabling intuitive interaction within 3D user interfaces. The book connected theoretical concepts with practical exercises and case studies to support research and application development.[19]
Rishe also developed a system that integrated diverse environmental datasets to study ecosystem behavior in the Florida Everglades. This platform facilitated data-driven ecological analysis, modeling, and visualization to support scientific research and environmental decision-making.[20]
