Amnon Lotem (Hebrew: אמנון לוטם) is an Israeli computer scientist. He works in artificial intelligence, modeling, and simulation techniques.
Biography
Amnon Lotem studied at Tel Aviv University, where he earned a B.Sc. and M.Sc. He later obtained a Ph.D. in 2000 under the supervision of Dana S. Nau at the University of Maryland, with a thesis titled GraphHTN: Combining Planning Graphs and HTN Planning.[1][2]
Following his academic pursuits, Lotem worked in various Israeli software companies in roles such as Director of Algorithmic Research, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and Scientific Director. Some of these companies include Amdocs and Technomatix Technologies. He is also a co-founder of Estimotion Ltd.
In 2002, Lotem joined Skybox Security, a company specializing in automated network security management. He led the development of patents and played a key role in developing fundamental algorithms for attack simulation, risk analysis, and compliance management. He assumed the position of CTO in 2010.[3]
Gödel Prize
In 2014, Amnon Lotem, along with Ronald Fagin and Moni Naor, was awarded the Gödel Prize[4][5] for their paper Optimal Aggregation Algorithms for Middleware.[6] In this work, they introduced an algorithm called the Threshold Algorithm. This algorithm is employed for finding optimal solutions in situations where information comes from numerous different sources, particularly in the domains of middleware, information retrieval, and machine learning. It offers an efficient method for generating a Top-List of results from diverse data sources. They also introduced a criterion called Instance Optimality and demonstrated that their Threshold Algorithm possesses this property.
