Narendra Singh Bankoti (N. S. Bankoti) is an Indian botanist and academic administrator. He is the Principal of Motiram Baburam Government Post Graduate College (MBGPG College) in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, an institution affiliated with Kumaun University.[1]

Early life and education

Originally from the village of Bankot in Pithoragarh district, undergraduate studies commenced at the DSB Campus in Nainital in July 1982. Transitioning to English-medium coursework presented initial academic challenges prior to the successful completion of a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. This academic foundation was subsequently followed by the completion of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).[2]

Professional experience includes teaching and administration in the fields of botany, plant ecology, and forest vegetation analysis. Prior to assuming the role of principal, teaching positions were held in the Department of Botany at MBGPG College and at L.S.M. Government Post Graduate College in Pithoragarh.[3] Administrative experience also includes serving as Deputy Director in the Higher Education Directorate prior to being appointed as the 28th Principal of MBGPG College in March 2022.[4][5]

Administrative responsibilities in this capacity include overseeing regional educational programs and implementing Kumaun University academic and examination guidelines for the student body.[6]

Research

Research focus areas encompass phytosociology, forest regeneration, and wetland plant sustainability in the Western and Central Himalayas. During the early 1990s, several peer-reviewed studies on high-altitude plant communities and tree layer species of the Kumaun region were co-authored with Y. P. S. Pangtey, R. S. Rawal, and S. S. Samant. Published work from this period appears in the International Journal of Biometeorology,[7] Vegetatio (now Plant Ecology),[8] and Tropical Ecology.[9]

Subsequent academic contributions involve environmental management research. Co-authored studies examining the design and sustainability of simulated constructed wetlands for treating urban waste and heavy metals were published in the Journal of Environmental Management (2016)[10] and Environmental Technology (2017).[11]
