Natalie Joyce De Vincentiis (born February 21, 2000) is an Italian-American novelist, actress, and screenwriter. She began her writing career at age 13, winning her first national writing award.[1] at age 15, and publishing her first novel War's Child [2] at age 16. She wrote and acted in Casualty (2017), an independent film by two university students at DAMS in Gorizia in 2017. Later, the film won third place at the Ragazzi e Cinema festival 2018, where De Vincentiis won Best Actress [3]
Early Life
De Vincentiis was born on February 21, 2000 in Monfalcone, Italy to an American mother and an Italian father. She has lived most of her childhood on the small island of Grado, Italy 134 km (83 miles) from Venice, Italy.
Education
De Vincentiis studied linguistics at Liceo Scipio Slataper in Gorizia and is currently studying film (B.F.A) at Syracuse University.
Career
At the age of 13, De Vincentiis started writing her novel War's Child and finished the first draft a year later at age 14. After editing the novel for a year, she started looking for publishers and landed on CreateSpace, publishing the book at the age of 16.
In 2017, De Vincentiis started working on a screenplay which would later be developed into her award-winning short film Casualty (2017). She showed the original screenplay to a teacher at school who later put her in contact with two film students at DAMS who were interested in filming the short. De Vincentiis acted in the film as the main protagonist and her performance won her the Best Actress award at Ragazzi e Cinema festival 2018 [3]
Casualty (2017)
Casualty (2017) is a short film directed by Alessandro Vazzoler, written by and starring Natalie De Vincentiis.
Inspiration
De Vincentiis wanted to talk about the violence of war without contextualizing the place or characters. She did so by playing with presence and absence, with time jumps between the present and the past. The story itself reflects events which happen every day around the globe, and for that reason, De Vincentiis decided to make the characters universal by not showing the soldier's face and giving the protagonist no dialogue.[3]
