Nathan Gary is a British video game designer. He is the lead designer at Annapurna Interactive's internal studio and formerly served as the creative director at Sony Santa Monica. His games What Remains of Edith Finch and Outer Wilds won BAFTA awards.
Gary founded Annapurna Interactive's video game division in 2016 and began releasing games in 2017. The division stems from Megan Ellison's firm. Under Gary's leadership, Annapurna has collaborated with various independent developers, such as Outer Wilds developer Mobius Digital and Ireland's Dreamfeel, the creators of If Found….
Gary has worked with notable game designers, including Jenova Chen from Thatgamecompany, who has previously contributed to fundraising and project scouting for the studio.[1]
In 2016, Megan Ellison, CEO of Annapurna hired Gary.[2] In 2023, Megan Ellison, CEO of Annapurna, promoted Gary to president at Annapurna. He oversees their film, TV, theatre, and interactive media divisions here.[3]
In 2016, Gary established Annapurna Interactive alongside AI executive James Masi. The group has released titles such as the BAFTA-winning games What Remains of Edith Finch and Outer Wilds. During his tenure, other notable releases from Annapurna Interactive include Gorogoa, If Found, Sayonara Wild Hearts, Donut County, Florence, Telling Lies, and The Artful Escape.
With Gary's elevation to the role of president, Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella have taken over as co-heads of the interactive division at Annapurna.[3]
