Dr. Nathaniel Hyman Leff (Hebrew: נתן חיים לב) was an American economist who originated foundational theories in Latin American economic development.

Early life[edit]

Leff was born on March 5, 1938, in New York City to Louis and Zelda Leff.[1] He attended Boston Latin School.[2] He received a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University in 1959, followed by a Master’s from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology;[2] his PhD advisor was the economist Albert Hirschman.[3]

From 1965 to 1967, Leff worked at the Research Association of the Studies Center of Education and Development at Harvard University. In 1967, he became an assistant professor at Columbia Business School in New York and in 1970, an associate professor there. From 1972 to 1973, he was an associate professor at Tel Aviv University in Tel Aviv. In 1973, he became a professor of business economics and international business, at the Columbia Business School. In 1977, Leff worked as a visiting professor at Princeton University.

Works[edit]

Economy[edit]

In 1968, Leff published two books about the economic history of Brazil.[4][5] In 1982 he published a two-volume book series on Underdevelopment and Development in Brazil.[6][7] Leff was first to formulate the idea that the relative poverty in Brazil was due its lack of economic integration, caused by the high costs of transportation during the 19th century. The dominant theory at the time rooted Brazil's economic impoverishment in its colonial history.[2]

Brazil historian William Summerhill stated that "[Leff] was the first to put together all these scattered texts about the Brazilian economy, and reflect on the information at his disposal within a conventional framework of economic analysis." Economist André Villela classified Leff as one of three foundational authors of the historical roots of the socioeconomic formation of Brazil, along with Caio Prado Júnior and Celso Furtado. In 2001, research conducted by João Fragoso and Manolo Florentino at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro supported many of Leff's hypotheses.[2]

Judaism[edit]

Leff was an Orthodox Jew and learned Torah with his colleagues at Columbia. In 2008, he published Emes V’Emunah (under the name Nosson Chayim Leff), a discussion of the commentary of the Sfas Emes on the Torah.[8]

Personal life[edit]

In the 1960s, Leff met Judith Weiss at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; Weiss, a French PhD student at the University of Paris, was doing the lab work for her thesis there at the time. The two married and had three children.[2]

Later years and death[edit]

In 1988, Leff was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.[2] After an experimental surgery that left him unable to communicate with others, Leff retired from academia in 1995.[2] He died in January 2019.[9][better source needed]
