National Association of State Treasurers
The National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) is a non-profit organization consisting of state treasurers or comparable senior finance officials from U.S. states, commonwealths, territories, and the District of Columbia. NAST was established in 1976, and is headquartered in Washington, DC.
The National Association of State Treasurers provides education and advocacy support to its members, allowing them to network and share best practices in the administration of financial policies and programs.
This support takes the form of in-person educational opportunities at conferences and remote learning through a webinar program. Members also communicate throughout the year through a variety of committees, publications, and policy advocacy that provide information about developments in public finance. The advocacy efforts of the organization are directed by member resolutions.
Membership consists of all state treasurers and comparable public finance officials across the United States. To build professional relationships and foster cooperation between the public and private sectors, the corporate affiliate program was created to represent the private sector interests.
NAST exists to assist state treasurers in influencing public policy at both the state and federal levels. It serves as an educational association for both treasurers and treasury staff, promoting standards of excellence regarding ethical conduct, policy guidelines and accountability and model legislation and regulations.[1]
Leadership[edit]
NAST is led by an executive committee which is staffed by constitutional requirements and voted upon during the Annual Business meeting at the Annual Conference. The principal officer of the committee is the NAST President who is responsible for taking action necessary to carry out the program of the association as fixed by the association and the national executive committee. The other members of the committee include the Senior Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Immediate Past President, the four regional presidents, chairs from SDMN, CSPN, and NAUPA, the Legislative Committee Chair, and the Corporate Affiliate Advisory Board chair.[2]
Conferences[edit]
Educational opportunities are provided for members at a variety of conferences through the year. These allow members to discuss innovative practices, learn from best practice examples, network with peers, and hear from a variety of subject matter experts.
Legislative Conference
Members come together to discuss legislative priorities and other advocacy issues at the annual legislative conference held in Washington each spring.
Treasury Management Training Symposium
The Treasury Management Training Symposium, NAST's largest conference, allows treasury staff and private sector members to take a deeper look into issues facing state treasuries.
National Institute of Public Finance
A joint partnership between the NAST Foundation and the Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University, The National Institute of Public Finance (NIPF) undertakes a wide range of initiatives including conducting professional development, research, strategic planning, and policy advocacy in areas related to public treasury management. The NIPF meeting occurs biennially, with the next conference scheduled for 2019.
Annual Conference
NAST's final conference of the year, the Annual Conference holds NAST's Annual Business meeting along with educational panels and social events.
