The National Defence Cross (Hungarian: Nemzetvédelmi Kereszt) was a Hungarian award instituted on 11 December 1940 by Regent Miklós Horthy. The statutes of the National Defense Cross stated: The National Defense Cross is awarded by His Excellency the Governor of Hungary to those who, either during the severe trials of communism in Hungary, or in the territories that were separated from our country and later returned to the Holy Crown, served the foreign during the difficult years of the occupation, they fought with unbreakable Hungarian faith against the forces that mutilated our country and sought to weaken the Hungarian nation, and showed a self-sacrificing attitude by risking their lives for the survival of Hungarians and Hungary.
History[edit]
The National Defense Cross is a 38 mm diameter cross with a stem converging towards the center, which is adorned on the medal surface with the small shield-shaped coat of arms of Hungary, with the Holy Crown above it. On the reverse, a shield in the center, with the inscription "For the Homeland 1940". The cross is worn on a 40 mm wide red-white-green ribbon folded in a triangular shape on the left breast. Between the 19-19 mm wide red and green border strips of the ribbon, there is a 2 mm wide white band. The National Defense Cross has one grade. The National Defense Cross is donated free of charge. The National Defense Cross could also be worn in a reduced form on private occasions.
This is the only award, donation and wearing of which was prohibited by decree both by Ferenc Szálasi in November 1944, and by the Provisional Government in June 1945. Current legal regulations still do not allow the award to be worn. It is a prohibited award.[1]
