The National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) is an American non-profit organization chartered by Congress in 1990 through Section 10[2] of the National Environmental Education Act to build effective public-private partnerships and develop programs that advance environmental education and engagement in the United States. NEEF is an independent[3], non-partisan, non-advocacy 501c3 nonprofit created to complement the work of the US Environmental Protection Agency. According to the NEEA, one of NEEF's purposes is: "to conduct such other environmental education activities as will further the development of an environmentally conscious and responsible public, a well-trained and environmentally literate workforce, and an environmentally advanced educational system."[4]

The organization focuses on K-12 education, health, and conservation. NEEF provides grant funding across its focus areas to help organizations build capacity and expand their work. NEEF is headquartered in Washington, DC.

Programs[edit]

The National Environmental Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization promoting environmental education and has the following active programs:

  • Greening STEM: NEEF's approach to STEM learning that uses the environment as a context for learning.[5][6][7]
  • National Environmental Education Week (National EE Week): National Environmental Education (EE) Week is a week-long event focusing on environmental education. EE Week happens annually in April.[8][9]
  • NEEF's Environmental Management of Pediatric Asthma: Resources and training for pediatric health care providers on managing environmental asthma triggers.[10][11][12][13]
  • Sunwise: An environmental and health education program to teach K-8 children about sun safety, UV radiation, and stratospheric ozone.[14]
  • Grants: Funding to support educators and nonprofit groups working in environmental education, health, and conservation. The majority of NEEF's grantmaking is through competitive grant award programs.[15][16][17]
  • National Public Lands Day (NPLD): NEEF organizes National Public Lands Day (NPLD), the largest single-day volunteer event in the US to celebrate public lands.[18] Launched in 1994, NPLD takes place annually on the fourth Saturday of September.[19][20][21][22][23]
