The National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS/SNCB) Class 52 and the related classes 53 and 54 were Co′Co′ diesel locomotives formerly used in Belgium.

In 1954, the Belgian State Railways Company ordered 40 locomotives from Anglo-Franco-Belge, of which

  • 22 series 202 (202.001 – 202.022 / later series 52) with a steam boiler, for heating passenger carriages
  • 18 series 203 (203.001 – 203.018 / later series 53) for cargo traffic, without such a boiler.

They were built under license from General Motors.

Before they could enter service, four were sold on to the CFL, who numbered them in the 1600 series:

  • 202.019 – 1601
  • 202.020 – 1602
  • 202.021 – 1603
  • 202.022 – 1604

For unclear reasons, 202.014 was not delivered as such but rather as 203.019.

About the same time, a new requirement arose, for faster diesel locomotives, to operate TEE services between Cologne and Paris at 140 km/h. Four more locomotives were ordered to meet this need, numbered 204.001 – 204.004. As their number was insufficient, the four last of the series 52 (202.015 – 202.018) were converted to 54 standard in NMBS/SNCB's own workshops at Schaarbeek, and renumbered 204.005 – 204-008.

Thus the series 52 properly spoken never counted more than 13 loco's (202.001 – 202.013), whereas 22 had originally been intended.
