The National Veterans Memorial and Museum is a military museum in Columbus, Ohio, United States, located along the Scioto River. It opened on October 27, 2018, in a building that cost $82 million to construct and was designed by architecture firm OLIN.
History[edit]
The site along the west side of the Scioto River near the Discovery Bridge on Broad Street was originally home to the Franklin County Veterans Memorial.[1] The construction of a veteran's museum was envisioned by city boosters and received support from former Senator John Glenn.[2]
It was designated as a national veterans memorial and museum by the United States Congress in June 2018.[3][4]
It was dedicated on October 27, 2018, by former general Colin Powell.[5]
Architecture[edit]
The $82 million, 53,000 square foot building was designed by OLIN.[6][7] The stated purpose of the architecture is to promote remembrance.[8]
Exhibits and collections[edit]
The museum focuses on the stories of veterans rather than military accomplishments. It has two permanent exhibits and one temporary exhibit space.[9]
