Nelson De La Nuez (born in 1959 in Havana, Cuba) is an American pop artist.[citation needed]

Early life and career[edit]

De La Nuez was born in Havana, Cuba and came to the United States at age seven, arriving in Southern California with his family in 1966.[1] His childhood obsession with television, cartoons and pop culture informed his later artwork.[citation needed]

Style and works[edit]

In 1980–82, De La Nuez began combining popular culture with parody and satirical humor, creating what he referred to as "Art Juxtaposed".[citation needed] He also calls his style "Art on the Edge" which refers to creating artwork on all four sides of the canvas.[citation needed] He is the creator and owner of the Museum of Humor Art (MOHA), which sells all of the his humor- and parody-related works.[citation needed]

Although he has always been identified as a pop artist, his style evolved and took on different elements as he integrated surrealism, old advertising, board games and nostalgia into his work. De La Nuez' work became recognizable in the 1980s for his use of iconic games such as Monopoly and newspaper backgrounds.[citation needed]

In May 2009 De La Nuez sold three works to Michael Jackson; he delivered them in June, not long before Jackson died.[2] On December 2, 2009, De La Nuez delivered three pieces to Jackson's children that were ordered before his death.[3]

The artist has also designed for a number of brands, including ICON leather shoes, purses and accessories;[4][5] men's shirts; and a wallpaper collection for both the hospitality industry and for retail sale by Designer Wallcoverings.[6]
