Nestor Sezefredo dos Passos Neto, known as Nestor Capoeira, is a Brazilian capoeira mestre and a book author.
Nestor Capoeira was a pioneer of capoeira in Europe,[1] likely the first Brazilian mestre who went to teach there.[2] He is author of The Little Capoeira Book, that is considered a must for capoeira players.[3][4]
Nestor has written dozen books about capoeira, published in different countries, with a total of over 120,000 books sold.[5]
Biography[edit]
Nestor was born in 1946 in Belo Horizonte.
He started learning capoeira in 1965 under the guidance of Mestre Leopoldina. In 1968, he became a member of the Senzala group in Rio de Janeiro, where he trained for the most of his career.[6] In 1969 he achieved the highest rank in Senzala, a red belt. Thereafter, he dedicated himself to teaching Capoeira both in Brazil and internationally.[5] In 1971 he ventured abroad, teaching in London and touring European cities for three years.[2]
In 1990 he started to work independently with his own specific teaching method.[1]
In parallel to his Capoeira carrier, Nestor pursued a career in engineering, graduating from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1969. He went on to earn a Master's degree in Communication from the School of Communication at UFRJ in 1995, followed by a Ph.D. in Communication and Culture from the same institution in 2001. He also conducted post-doctoral research at PUC/São Paulo (Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo).[5]
