The Netherlands Commission for UNESCO (Dutch: de Nederlandse Unesco Commissie [1]) is one of almost 200 National Commissions for UNESCO worldwide, a unique structure in the UN system, foreseen by UNESCO's constitution of 1946.[2]
The Netherlands Commission for UNESCO was established in 1947.[3] It has three main tasks:[4]
- It advises the Dutch government on UNESCO matters in the fields of education, science, culture and communication.
- It provides information in the Netherlands on UNESCO's objectives, program and activities.
- It forms the link between the world community united in UNESCO and the UNESCO stakeholders in the Netherlands, such as the national government, professional institutions, organizations and experts in the fields of education, culture, communication and science. This is two-way traffic.
The Netherlands Commission for UNESCO has up to 11 members, all of whom are experts in one or more areas of UNESCO. As of September 1, 2019, Kathleen Ferrier is the chairperson. A secretariat supports the Commission. In addition, there is a UNESCO Youth Commission.
