New American Paintings is a magazine that publishes images of new work by American painters selected in a competition. Founded in 1993, it selects artists every year from a pool of thousands to be featured in each of its regional and national issues.[1][2][3][4]
The magazine was founded in 1993 by art collector and magazine publisher Herbert Gliick, who published the boating magazine Offshore, and editor Steven Zevitas. [5][6]
Initially, the magazine was funded primarily by Gliick. In 1996, he told the Washington Post that while he was shipping nearly 7,000 issues to his distributor, paid subscriptions were only in the hundreds.[6]
