New Pagans are a Northern Irish alternative rock band based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The band are known for their live performances and their guitar rock sound.[1] Lyndsey McDougall is vocal about her experiences of pregnancy and motherhood, and has performed live while pregnant.[2] They released their debut album "The Seed, The Vessel, The Roots and All" on Big Scary Monsters in 2018.

History

New Pagans were formed in 2016 when Lyndsey McDougall and Cahir O'Doherty (musician) began writing music together, initially as a four-piece before bringing in guitarist Allan McGreevy.[3] The band features former members of Northern Irish bands including Fighting with Wire and Girls Names. They released their first singles "Lily Yeats" and "I Could Die" later that year, receiving their first radio play on BBC Radio Ulster.[4] Their first live performance took place in Sandinos, Derry in March 2017.[5] In November 2019 they performed on BBC Sounds New broadcast on BBC One Northern Ireland and at Other Voices.[6]

In March 2020 they released their first EP Glacial Erratic, which included many of their previous singles. Following its release they embarked on a first UK tour, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. In November 2020 they were awarded Best Live Act at the Northern Ireland Music Prize.

In January 2021 they signed to British record label Big Scary Monsters.[7] The band announced their debut album alongside a new single "Christian Boys" in January 2021.[8] The album The Seed, The Vessel, The Roots and All was released on Big Scary Monsters in March 2021.[9] The album received coverage from Kerrang! and NPR, as well as radio play on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6 Music, Radio X and RTÉ 2FM.[10][11]

They performed virtually for The Great Escape Festival in May 2021.[12]
